Katie & David’s Tour de 4 Challenge

Back in 2021 Katie’s husband was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. Thankfully he responded well to immunotherapy and four and a half years on he is doing well and is having six monthly scans.

During September, Katie and her husband took part in the Sir Chris Hoy tour de 4, a 56K bike ride aimed at shining a spotlight on stage 4 cancer diagnosis with the aim of changing the perception of living with stage 4 cancer.

“When I heard Chris Hoy was organising the tour de 4 it felt like something we had to take part in. The tour de 4 is a bike ride aimed at shining a spotlight on stage 4 cancer diagnosis with the aim of changing the perception of living with stage 4 cancer. When you’re in the time of waiting for results, starting treatment, waiting for more results, it’s an incredibly scary and lonely place to be. Not lonely in the sense of not having people around you, but lonely in the sense of no one quite being able to understand exactly what it’s like, the fear, the pain, the uncertainty. And so this bike ride was not only an opportunity to test ourselves with a 56km cycle, but also an opportunity to be around other people who have been through the same experience and just get it. And of course the opportunity to give back and raise vital funds for such an incredible charity.”

“During the ride, a man cycled up to me (I was wearing my Melanoma focus top with pride) and starting telling me how he was one of the first people to receive the immunotherapy trial back in 2013 and how he was discharged a number of years ago. Stories and connections like this give you so much hope and make you realise what a strong community there is out there. It was such a humbling experience, with people riding for so many different reasons and I am so grateful to Chris Hoy for creating something so joyful and positive for people with stage 4 cancer. Thank you to everyone who sponsored us, it meant such a huge amount.”

We would like to say a huge thank you to Katie and her husband who raised over £1,734 for Melanoma Focus. We are extremely grateful for their amazing support, thank you also to Chris Hoy for organising this important event.
