A Preventable Crisis: The Case For A National UV Safety Strategy

Today the APPG on Beauty, Hair and Well- Being has published a new report, “A Preventable Crisis: The case for a national UV safety inquiry”

For too long there has been no clear plan to tackle dangerous UV exposure, despite the clear evidence that almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer are preventable. This welcome report presents a wide range of actions that, together, would bring meaningful change.
These important measures include supporting Melanoma Focus’ campaign to reduce the cost of sunscreen by cutting VAT. The report also calls for action to improve skin safety education in secondary schools, introduce a long-term public health campaign on UV safety, require commercial operators of sunbeds to have a licence, and ban products marked as tanning accelerators, amongst other measures.

With the Government soon to publish a consultation on sunbed use, we hope a broader range of actions to reduce UV exposure will now be considered alongside this consultation. The recommendations of the APPG should be implemented as soon as possible.
